"Today we look extensively on why such strategic car (Toyota) Etios not so sold in India, as part of efforts to prepare ourselves if we asked (to develop a cheap car) formally by Toyota," said an executive of another Daihatsu.
These executives declined to be named because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
They also did not give a specific description of how Daihatsu could help efforts of Toyota in India, but referred to Indonesia as a model of success that could be emulated, while pointing mini car market Agya incoming Toyota but supplied by Daihatsu.
"We always consider several options, including a collaboration with Daihatsu. Nevertheless, no decision has been generated," said Ryo Sakai, a spokesman for Toyota.
"We have discussed the steps accelerate the realization of expansion of our business cooperation with Toyota outside Indonesia and Malaysia for some time, but nothing specific has been decided at this point," said a spokesman for Daihatsu Kazuki Inoue told Reuters.
